Tata Motors - Sustainability Initiatives for F. Y. 2012 - 13

Tata Motors has adopted affirmative action policy of Tata Group which focuses on inclusive growth. The community development programs have been designed to ensure inclusive growth by involving marginalised sections of society, the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). The sustainability initiatives of Tata Motors can be broadly classified into the following areas :

  • Health
  • Drinking Water
  • Education
  • Skill Development
  • Environment

Health

Tata Motors offers medical facilities in communities with a special emphasis on maternal and child health. A specialized malnutrition treatment centre has been established in partnership with UNICEF Jharkhand.

The company has also been conducting medical camps in rural areas and has constructed several low cost toilets.

Drinking Water

Safe Drinking Water project was established under the aegis of SMDF (Sumant Moolgaonkar Development Foundation). The focus of the project is to provide clean and safe drinking water to protect the vulnerable sections particularly women, children and elderly from health hazards. 68 villages have become the project beneficiaries till March 2013.

Education

The focus here is rural children and the methodology entails case based holistic approach. Several scholarship programmes and coaching classes for weak students have been initiated. Emphasis has also been given to infrastructure development.

Skill Development

In one of the most far reaching skill development initiatives, Tata Motors has been working with 135 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) spread over 19 states. The scope of this initiative includes upgrade of training facilities, teacher training programs, youth training in automotive trades and other such programs. Other skill development initiatives include training in agriculture and allied activities and driver training program.

Environment

The initiatives under this domain include plantation of saplings, soil and water conservation and awareness building activities related to environmental issues.
